Aroma & Cannabis: The 3 (major) factors that determine the taste

The aroma of cannabis is determined by 3 main factors

What does the aroma of cannabis depend on? Why can two plants of the same variety have different aromas? Here is the answer in 3 points.

When it comes to cannabis, legal cannabis, CBD, THC,… and cannabinoids in general, words such as aroma, fragrance, smells, etc., are often used.

Aromas are, in fact, one of the first characteristics that are studied to determine the quality of a cannabis plant.

Regarding the importance of aromas, it is, however, often the case that two plants of the same variety present significantly different aromatic notes.

Why is this happening?

Are there factors influencing this phenomenon?

The answer is yes, and you can learn more about this topic by reading the following.

Here is a clear and straightforward insight into the connection between aroma and cannabis.

The diet of the plant determines the relationship between aroma and cannabis.

Marijuana and CBD cannabis plants have a very diverse and unique genetic heritage

The same cannabis strain, when grown in two different places, can form a completely different combination of flavours and fragrances. If you have already dealt with cannabis plants, you will surely know what we mean.

Still, you will be amazed that there are cannabis plants that are characterised by solid flower aromas. Besides, other flavours recall the scent of strawberries, peaches and different varieties of fruit, others that remind of the smell of diesel, and even other ones reminding the smell of cheese or spices.

Incredible, right?

All of this results from the fact that the cannabis plant contains, in addition to the most well-known cannabinoids such as CBD, approximately 120 terpenes, about 60 terpenoids, 20 flavonoids and many other substances that affect both flavours and effects.

The variability of these elements’ presence and the aroma of cannabis depends on the cultivation of the plant. Here’s why.

1) Cannabis fertilisation and flavours: blends make all the difference.

In cannabis cultivation, as in many other agricultural sectors, it is widespread to feed the plants with fertilisers that guarantee a faster and more abundant growth.

Before moving forward, it must be stated that there are fertilisers that are absorbed immediately by the plant and other fertilisers that must instead undergo a transformation process through enzymes before they are absorbed.

In legal marijuana, fertilisers that are most commonly used are the ones that can be absorbed immediately, also because cannabis is mainly grown with hydroculture technology. The use of fertilisers of this type throughout the cultivation period means that the plant, more than its variety, can be strongly influenced by this specific fertiliser’s aroma.

To avoid this phenomenon and to bring high-quality CBD cannabis plants to life, it is therefore essential to pay the greatest attention to the fertilisers used and to ensure that different nutrient mixtures are used to positively affect the development of the cannabis aroma and the health of the plant, which will undoubtedly grow better.

2) Organic nutrients produce synthetically.

The origin of fertilisers can also have a significant influence on the aroma formation in a cannabis plant.

Although chemical fertilisers often allows bigger yields, the use of organic nutrients can make a difference in the quality of the yields.

After some tests, it turned out that cannabis plants grown organically, or mostly fertilised with nutrients of organic origin, were more terpene-rich and therefore had a higher concentration of quality flavourings.

On the other hand, the use of synthetic fertilisers often leads to the formation of undesirable flavours, which are almost guaranteed, especially in the final phase of harvesting.

To avoid pronounced aromas produced by fertilisers (including organic ones), growers often carry out a special wash of the plants about 15 days before harvest, which allows to eliminate salt deposits in the roots.

3) Enzymes, insects and … the environment of roots: how they influence the cannabis aromas

Many other factors can also influence the aroma of legal cannabis plants as well as the more or less correctly used fertilisers.

Some producers prefer to restrict the use of fertilisers to feed the plant and to compensate for this by using enzymes. The enzymes can degrade the substances contained in the soil or in the residues of fertilisers (which are used only occasionally), which allows them to be better absorbed by the plant.

The fact that less organic and chemical nutrients are used makes it possible to change the original aroma of the plant as little as possible.

However, there are also cases where we want to promote certain flavourings, which is particularly true with some methods:

  • one is to use insects to let the plant develop certain types of terpenes or alkaloid acids,
  • another is to plant other plant species near the roots of the cannabis plant.

Depending on the chosen plant, cannabis develops certain substances that determine the formation of the desired flavours.

Conclusions

As you now understand, the aromas formation in a cannabis plant depends very much on the farmer’s experience, the selection of nutrients, and the times chosen for the diet.

Those who are in a hurry to grow the plant faster use too many fertilisers, as they risk changing the flavours of the marijuana, which makes them much less enjoyable.

After this clarification, you will now have a clearer view of why two CBD cannabis plants of the same strain can even smell completely different aromas.
